3 Tips to Organize for Tech Savvy Travel

Whether for business or pleasure, most travelers bring technology along on their trip.  Smartphones, laptops, tablets, MP3 players, e-readers and cameras make up some of the most common pieces of technology in travel bags today.  Just as you should be thoughtful and strategic about which clothes you pack, you should do the same in your approach to technology.  Here are the top 3 things to consider as you plan your technology packing list.

1.  Power it up.  You need power for your devices.

  • Fully charge your devices before you depart.
  • Reduce the number of adapters and cables you carry by re-charging via USB.  Most devices support charging via a USB connection to either an external power source or outlet.  When possible consolidate your charging equipment to more universal and often smaller USB cables and adapters.
  • Carry a power strip or USB hub.  Often it is hard to locate an AC outlet, let alone multiple outlets.  Carrying a small power strip or USB hub will allow you to charge multiple devices from one outlet.
  • External battery pack.  An external battery pack can recharge devices when an outlet isn’t available.  Some external battery models support simultaneously charging multiple devices.

2.  Contain it.  You need a way to corral unwieldy cables and keep track of small devices.

  • The Grid It system provides a simplistic and highly customizable way to contain and organize your tech and accessories.
  • Wrap your cables.  There are a variety of products designed to help manage cables.  Find one that works for you and eliminate the rat’s nest of cable in your travel bag.

3.  Back it up.  Accidents and thefts happen.  What would you lose if your mobile device or laptop were stolen or damaged?

  • Before you go, back up the data on your devices.
  • When possible on the road, upload your pictures or newly acquired data to cloud storage.  This will help lessen the blow and stress and speed your recovery if your device disappears or meets a catastrophic end.

Use these tips to get your tech gear organized and travel-ready.
