How Long Will it Take to Get Organized?

This is a common question.  Unfortunately, there isn’t a common answer.  The right answer depends on a number of factors including:

  • the status of your current situation,
  • your goals,
  • your readiness to make a change, and
  • the time and energy you have available to dedicate to improving your organization.

To help you get a better sense for how long it might take to get organized, consider your answers to the following questions:

  • How large is the area to be organized (number of rooms, types of systems needed for organization and maintenance, etc.)?
  • How much clutter is there in the space (both visible and hidden)?
  • How deeply do you want to organize? For example:
    • Is this a quick declutter in anticipation of house guests?
    • Do you want to really dig in declutter and establish systems to keep the order in place?
    • Do you want a better system for processing paper today forward or just a quick sort and reorganization of paper into a current (perhaps unfunctional) system
  • How much time do you have to work on this?
  • How long did it take to get you to the situation you’re in today?
    • Do you have a long history of living and working in disorganized spaces and have years of clutter to work through?
    • Has a recent change created disorder and you just need help getting back on track?
  • How quickly and comfortable are you with decision-making?
  • How emotionally attached are you to what needs to be organized?
  • Are you getting organized because you want to or because someone else wants you to?
  • Are you willing to change?
