4 Things to Do Before Traveling with Children

Before you hit the road or take off on your next trip traveling with children, prepare for an organized trip by doing these 4 things.

  1. Prepare to Feed – Travel delays and limited access to healthy food choices can result in hungry and irritable travel companions.  Before you set off on your trip with children, prepare your provisions and do this again before your return trip.
  2. Prepare to Entertain – When the fun of starting the journey fades, be prepared to help kids entertain themselves by packing a collection of age-approrpriate small toys, games, books and electronics.  Never doubt the entertaining value of novelty.  Purchase some new things before the trip and bring them out when boredom sets in.
  3. Prepare for the Unexpected – Injuries, illness and accidents happen.  Prepare a travel first aid kit and make it accessible along with a change of clothing for everyone you’re traveling with.  Many parents have needed a change of clothes after a child’s drink accidentally spills on an airplane.
  4. Include Kids in the Preparations – A frequent cause of irritability and stress for children of all ages is fear of the unknown.  Mitigate this by including children in your travel preparations.  Talk about the logistics of where you’re going, where you’ll sleep, how you’ll get there and what types of things you need to pack.  These conversations go a long way to preparing children for the upcoming trip.
