Focus on the Action Rather than the Outcome

How to Stay Focused and Not Get Overwhelmed by Your New Year’s Goals

2022 is here and with it many of us have new goals we want to achieve this year. But as we wrote in “Make 2022 the Year for YOU!”, according to the New York Times, the average New Year’s resolution lasts for 32 days (i.e. until February 1st). So how do you beat the odds and succeed in keeping with your goals until they are achieved? Here are a few tips:

Focus on the Action Rather than the Outcome

Long term goals can be daunting. It’s easy to get discouraged, overwhelmed, or bored in your quest to reach those goals if you are focused on the end result only. So instead of focusing on the outcome, focus on the actions you are taking towards your goal. The outcome may seem a bit elusive, at least for now, but the actions are in your control.

For example, let’s say you have a goal of making ten new friends in 2022. Instead of counting how many new friends you are making each week or month, focus on the activities you are doing to reach your goal. Are you being more outgoing? What type of events are you attending? Are you getting out of your comfort zone? By focusing on the actions, you think less about the outcome and more about the steps to achieve the desired outcome. And, often, the results will follow.

Break it into Chunks

Another strategy to help keep from getting overwhelmed by long term goals is to break it into smaller chunks. If your goal is to lose 20 pounds in 2022 that can sound like a daunting number. But what if you set your goal to lose five pounds each quarter of 2022? Or even two pounds each month? That sounds much more achievable! And again, as with the example in the previous paragraph, focus on the action rather than the outcome. Are you eating healthy foods? Are you exercising? If so, the results should follow.

Get an Accountability Partner

A proven way to stick to something is to have someone in your corner that supports you, pushes you when needed, and holds you accountable. That person can be a friend that has the same goal, a spouse or life-partner who supports you, a co-worker, or a coach. No matter who it is, share your exact goals with your accountability partner, explain what steps you will be taking to reach those goals, break them into chunks, and check in with your partner on a regular basis. The effectiveness of accountability may seem like magic; it works!
