Get Organized For The Health Of It

What does organization have to do with your health? More than you think!

Being organized affects more than just your environment – it also has a strong relationship with your level of health and well-being. Clutter and chaos can make us feel overwhelmed and out of control, contributing to increased levels of stress in our bodies, lives, and relationships.

Organized desk, after

Take a look at the desk pictured on the left. How does it make you feel? Does it give you stress, or anxiety, or make you want to tidy it up? Would you be able to find something you needed without spending an hour searching for it? Would you want that to be your desk?

Then take a look at the desk on the right. How does it make you feel? Does it give you a sense of peace, knowing that you can see everything in an organized way and find what you need, when you need it?

Organization can positively impact your ability to achieve your health and well-being goals.

When you are organized, you have more time for what matters most. When you are not wasting time looking for things you know you have but can’t find (the average person wastes an hour a day on this!), you’ll have more time to plan healthy meals, walk, hike, workout (or whatever “moves” you), more time to nurture healthy relationships, and more time to meditate, reflect, talk, journal, or otherwise process your thoughts and feelings.

Organized systems and productive habits can reduce friction that might keep you from achieving your health and well-being goals.

Consider putting in place systems and habits that make it easy to take care of your nutrition, exercise, mental health and well-being needs. A few ideas:

  • Incorporate a weekly meal planning system
  • Shop from (and stick to) a grocery list, full of items that support your goals and absent of things that do not.
  • Lay out your workout clothes before you go to bed.  This way you can slip into them easily in the morning and get moving.
  • Solicit an accountability partner and state your intentions. Ask them to hold you accountable.
  • Have a place where you always store your keys so that you can get out the door easily when you need to.
  • Consider incorporating apps or low-tech (paper chart) ways to guide and track your activity and progress towards certain health goals (meditation, hydration, nutrition, exercise, etc.).

Getting organized for the health of it

When we think about organization and the impact on our health, there are several factors to consider, such as:

  • How does organization impact health and wellness?
  • How is clutter “weighing” us down?
  • Why is it hard to let things go?
  • What are some good time management strategies to help us prioritize self-care, health and wellness?
  • What are some good tips to help establish new habits?
  • How do “routines” benefit our health goals?

Also, take a look at these five health benefits of organization and ask yourself if perhaps there is no time like the present to clear out the clutter and reclaim your life… for the health of it!
