How to Reset and Reach Your Goals for Success

Resetting and reaching goals

Remember back in January when you set your goals for 2020? Who would have imagined where we would be today?

Fall brings changing weather and a return to familiar routines and schedules. Kids return to school, we may have enjoyed some time off work over the summer, and September is a great time to re-evaluate the goals set at the beginning of the year.

Whether they are professional or personal goals, chances are – in this exceptional year – that you’ve encountered some unexpected hurdles along the way. Consider if your goals are still relevant and important to you? Are they still realistic if you reset how you will reach them and making the most of your time each day, or given where things are right now, do you want to refresh your goals, establishing new ones about which you feel excited, energized, and believe to be possible.

Today, many of us are working from home and some are also helping kids with virtual school. Let’s face it: some days are just hard! Are you struggling with finding the motivation to move forward with your own personal goals? Re-evaluate, re-prioritize or adjust your goals to make them fit better into how your life and work have changed. Maybe you just need to adjust your plan on how you’ll reach the end result.

What is it that you want to accomplish and why?

You’ve probably heard the phrase “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. Sometimes it takes more than just a will, it takes a “why”. When there is something you want badly enough, you’re more likely to find a way to make it happen.  Find your why and you’ll more easily be motivated to find your way. Where there’s a why, there’s a way. Based on your why, recommit to your original goal, adjust it so that it is more realistic, but still satisfies your “why” or set a different goal that is more in line with where you’re at, what you want, and why you want it if those things have shifted significantly from the time you originally set the goal.

How are you going to get there?

Once you know what you want to accomplish, and have a compelling “why” to be your North Star, make a plan. With your affirmed commitment to your original goals, your adjusted goals or new goals in mind, turn to your calendar and plot out some of the activity you want to take to help you accomplish your desired results.

What are the actions you could incorporate into your life, your day, or your work that could help you get closer to your goals? What habits can you change or build to help you move forward? By investing in yourself, you are investing in your goals. If something is truly important, how will you make the time for it?
