Organize Your Tote Bags and Purses: Monday Mom’s Moment

As mothers we play many roles.  A frequent role is that of family Sherpa or pack mule.  We take the responsibility of carrying supplies, must-have items and just-in-case things to daily activities and family outings.  We know the value of having tote bags and purses to support this work.  Below are some ideas for how to better organize the bags you use and ways to prepare and store your bags so they are ready when you are.

One way to be prepared for whatever activity that comes your way is to assign specific jobs to your bags.  Some of these may be a no-brainer.  Bags like purses, diaper bags and gym bags have clearly defined roles.

Consider assigning and preparing bags for other purposes.

  • Volunteer work: Have a bag to hold items related to a volunteer position you hold.  The bag can store items related to this work when not in use and is at the ready when you head out for a meeting or event.
  • Casual reading: Keep a bag to collect papers and magazines that you would like to read when you have time.  Take this bag along the next time you travel or have some free time between appointments or while waiting for your kids to finish a class or practice.
  • Crafts: If you enjoy doing craft work at home or out of the house, keep a tote bag or basket stocked and ready.
  • Quiet activities: Heading out to a restaurant or long drive with your kids? Prep a bag with age-appropriate games and toys.
  • Outdoor: Having a bag ready with supplies for a day at the park or beach makes getting out the door quicker and easier.  Adjust the contents of the bag as the seasons change.

Do you find yourself transferring items from one handbag to another?  Consider the benefits of using a purse organizer to help ease the transition and assure all of your important items are in the right place at the right time.  Here are some purse inserts our organizers use:

Assign a place to store your packed and prepped bags.  This might be a closet or in a specified place in a transition zone (entry/exit point) in your home.  Consider the following ways of storing your bags when not in use:

  • Cubbies
  • Wall hooks
  • Back of door hooks or hangers
  • Large basket or bin
  • A handbag storage bin designed to hold up bags and sit on a shelf or floor

Finally, establish a routine for decluttering and restocking your bags.  Ideally you want your bags to be prepped and ready so they help you get out of the house easily.  Make time in the morning or evening each day or once a week to make sure your bags are stocked and rid of items you no longer need.
