4 Tips for How to Plan for Holiday Fun

And so it begins… the busy winter holiday season. There are many events, parties and traditions old and new to enjoy.  So many fun things in fact that without a bit of planning now at the beginning of the month you may run out of time, focus and stamina to truly enjoy the season.  Here’s where a few minutes of planning can make a positive impact for you and your family this month.

4 Tips for How to Plan for Holiday Fun

  1. Reflect and check in – Before you look at all of the event guides and calendars, reflect on the previous holiday seasons.  What did you enjoy doing?  What would you want to do again?  What haven’t you done?  If you could only do 2 things this season what would they be? Consider doing this reflection activity during a family dinner or afternoon drive between after-school activities so that you can collect this information from everyone in your family.
  2. Consider your options – Now that you know what’s important to you and your family, open up those event guides and calendars to see what options you have for this year.
  3. Make a schedule – Schedule time for both events and down-time.  The holiday spirit can take a swift turn when you and your family are too tired from all of the fun.  As you make a schedule keep a critical eye out for over-scheduling.  Share the schedule with your family to help them know what’s happening and to give them time to prepare for upcoming events.
  4. Let your plan be a guide – A plan is just that… a plan.  It should not dictate what must happen.  A plan is a guide.  It reflects your interests and hopes captured during a calm moment and serves as a reminder and focus point as life becomes more hectic.  Be open to spontaneity and changes to the plan when doing so makes sense for you and your family.
