Tech Talk Thursday: Use Your Smart Phone to Stop Unwanted Snail Mail

Does the amount of junk mail you still receive make you crazy? Want to reduce the time you spend sorting the mail and the volume of paper that winds up in your recycling bin?

Catalogchoice.org is a free web site that allows you to reduce the paper clutter in your life by opting out of catalogs, coupons, credit card offers, and more. In doing so, you’ll also be taking additional steps to protect your privacy and save natural resources. And of course, there’s also an app for that! Two, actually.

Mail Stop Mobile is a free app by Catalog Choice that works with your iPhone. Just snap a photo of the unwanted piece of mail, and Catalog Choice will contact the company on your behalf. The app is free on iTunes, and comes with 5 free mail opt-outs. Additional opt-outs are inexpensive and can be purchased through iTunes.

If you want another free app option on your iPhone or you use an Android or Windows smart phone, check out Seattle-based PaperKarma. It works the same way – just take a picture of the offending mail item and send it to the PaperKarma team. They’ll do the rest!

Enjoy all that new-found free time and the good feelings that come from making an environmentally responsible choice! For more ideas on how to reduce the amount of your snail mail, check out our previous post, Six Easy Ways to Eliminate Junk Mail.
