Find Time Friday: Best Ways to Develop Time Management Skills

Just like any skill, time management skills require effort and practice to master. Old habits die hard, and it takes a commitment to develop new time management skills and using them consistently to see the benefits. This Friday make it a priority to increase the time you have left out of every busy day to enjoy life.

5 Best Ways to Develop Time Management Skills

develop time management skills1. Lists are your friends.

One of the most basic skills in improving time management is listing what you need to accomplish and to prioritize your tasks. The first step to managing your time is to know exactly what needs to be done. Choose one and only one list-making tool.

Keeping up single system is smartest – it is the one reliable place to capture, view and track your tasks, so you’ll always know where to look. Whether you write the list in a notebook, daily planner, software like Outlook (tasks feature) or use online tools like Todoist, make a list and stick to it.

2. Set deadlines.

Once you have your tasks brainstormed and know what needs to be done, make sure you set deadlines on when each task needs to be completed. Work on setting goals and deadlines for tasks on your list for the week, month and even the year.

3. Procrastination is the ultimate time management enemy.

Putting off until later what can be done now is a sure way to get behind in your day. We usually put off the things we dislike the most, making them even more difficult to do once we are exhausted from our day. Get those dreaded chores done early, and experience the satisfaction of checking them off your list!

4. Delegate.

You are the manager of your time, and as any good manager knows, delegating is a key to success. Give tasks to your kids, your partner and then if all else fails, outsource! Your time is valuable, and sometimes it is better to let someone else take over some of your duties versus them not getting done at all.

5. The power of no.

Often we ask too much of ourselves, as do others, and before we know it, our plates are overloaded. Sometimes we need to say no to stay on task and keep up with all we have to get done throughout the day.

Developing excellent time management skills does take work and can mean changing the way you do things, but the benefits are worth the effort. By learning ways to better manage your time, you can have less stress, have more time to relax and enjoy the sweet satisfaction that comes with knowing you crossed everything off your list for the day!
