I have a journal that gives me a question a day to answer. Today’s question was “What is one invention you can’t live without?” My answer: my smartphone. It is almost always with me and I love how it helps me stay connected to people, information, apps that help me, are interesting to me, or useful to me in various ways throughout the day. And, the “always connected” reality can also be a problem. It can be a distraction, a time-suck, an expectation (always being available to others), and even feel like a compulsion or addiction at times. I realize that I need to unplug to recharge.
There are things I spend time on, people I spend time with, activities I engage in, and health results I’m after that I know would benefit from time away from any devices, where, despite the connectedness that my phone makes me feel, I can truly be connected, present, and focused. Do you feel the same? Do you need to disconnect in order to connect?
When was the last time you truly disconnected? No emails. No scrolling. No notifications demanding your attention. If that sounds like a luxury, it might be time for a reset.
I challenge you to unplug to recharge this month
This April, I’m inviting you to join the Screen-Free Sundays: Digital Detox Challenge. It’s a simple but powerful commitment to unplug from devices one day a week and reclaim your time, focus, and energy.
Why Go Screen-Free?
Our devices are designed to keep us engaged. Often, that comes at the cost of presence, productivity, and peace of mind. By stepping away from screens for a full day, you can:
- Reduce digital overwhelm and break the cycle of constant connectivity
- Recharge your mind and body with restful, screen-free activities
- Reconnect with what matters most, whether that’s family, hobbies, or simple stillness
- Regain control of your time and create a healthier relationship with technology
How It Works
- Commit – Decide now that Sundays will be screen-free and share your commitment. Want to really stretch yourself? Choose one weekend this month that you’ll unplug to recharge all weekend long!
- Prepare – Set up auto-responders, notify key contacts, and plan screen-free activities. Take a look ahead of time in your phone’s settings to see what your screen time usage is now (you may be shocked) and then think about and plan activities, rest, recreation, etc that you’d like to engage in if only you have the time – because you do!
- Unplug – Spend your Sunday offline, engaging in activities that bring you joy. (It’s Tulip season in the NW; how would it feel to tiptoe through the tulips untethered?)
- Reflect & Report – On Monday, share your experience: What did you notice? What felt hard? What felt freeing?
