What does your day look like? Visualize and verbalize your goals to improve focus and results

We talk a lot about various tools and techniques for goal setting and time management. Sometimes small simple things can make a big difference in helping you plan your time and stick to your goals. In addition to writing down goals and to-do lists, there are two simple practices that can help you plan your time and stay focused: visualize and verbalize. If you visualize yourself going through a series of steps to complete a task, and tell yourself or someone else what you are going to do when, you increase the likelihood that you will accomplish what you set out to do.

Say It Out Loud

To visualize and verbalize your way to better time management and focus, all it takes is a few minutes. Here’s how it works. At the start of each morning, take a few moments to look ahead at your day. Visualize the hours that are coming up, and say out loud what you plan to do when. Say it out loud to yourself, and even better, to a family member, coworker or other accountability partner if you can. While you are saying what you are planning to do, visualize yourself doing it. This gives your day shape and goals and helps you prioritize. It also adds accountability, and helps reduce chaos, even if things change.

Visualize at Night

You can use also use visualization and verbalization at the end of the day to help you let go of that day and prepare for the next. Briefly reflect on how your day went, what you did, and what is coming up tomorrow. Say out loud what you intend to do the next day. Then the following morning, when you ask yourself “What does my day look like?”, think about what you visualized the night before and say it, out loud, again.
