Welcome to our new mini-series confronting the issues Moms (and Dads) face around the nightly homework routine. For the next three weeks, we’ll be discussing the most common issues, homework troubles and organization challenges facing parents and students and sharing unique solutions.
Now that school is well underway, many of us have been reminded of the trials homework can bring. Over the past 8 years, I’ve had lots of time to try, fail, and try again to set up a successful homework routine for my kids. I think I almost have it under control.
Helpful Homework Hint #1: Make them comfortable. As we all know, different kids have different needs. While some kids work well at a desk in a quiet room, others do better at the kitchen table in the middle of family interaction. Some kids need absolute silence to focus, others concentrate better with background music. Decide with your kids what works best for them. Help them to set up a homework station and stock the space with supplies…pencils, pens, paper, ruler etc…Maybe have them choose a few new items for their special place. For those nomads that like to work where the action is, create a homework supplies basket or tote that can be carried from room to room.
