Monday Mom’s Moment: Is My Student Disorganized?

Students have much to learn.  Of course there are the academic subjects and the social learning that goes along with both being in school and growing up in general.  A subject that doesn’t often get attention from students, educators and parents is organizational skills.

Below are several indications of disorganization in students:

  • Frequently loses papers
  • Doesn’t hand in assignments on time or at all
  • Has a backpack full of crumpled paper and random objects
  • Can’t break down long-term projects and misses deadlines
  • Leaves everything for the last minute
  • Disrupts home life with frantic searchers, urgent requests for late-night help, and anxiety-ridden meltdowns

When a student struggles to achieve academic goals a key area to consider is the student’s organizational skill-set.  The basic organizational skills that help adults at work and at home are the same ones that contribute to student success.  These organizational skills include:

  • Being able to find and manage resources like books and supplies,
  • Managing time in both the short- and long-term,
  • Establishing and using routines that result in organized behaviors

While some adults and children have a natural inclination for acquiring and using organizational skills, others don’t.  That doesn’t mean that they can’t.  People can learn and use organizational skills!  Simply Placed teaches and supports students in learning and practicing organizational skills.  We identify organizational tools and establish routines and systems that support organized behaviors.  Organized students have less stress and more time and energy to focus on their studies and extra-curricular activities.  Contact us to discuss your disorganized student and to learn more about how we can help.
