Tech Talk Thursday: How Are You Using Your Computer?

Although we often set out to get work done by using a computer, aspects of computing like social media, the Internet or an article filled with links disengage us from our goal.  Take a few minutes this Thursday to become more conscious about how you use your computer for work and ways you can become more conscious of it to improve your focus and output.

Turning off notifications from software like email readers, Facebook, Twitter and news feeds results in regaining hours of focused productivity each day.  Make the decision to check in with these services in a way that contributes to your productivity.

Hyper-links abound in many online articles.  Clicking on each one as you come to them can take you deeper into the subject than you needed or wanted to go.  It may be very interesting, however, does it add value?  Does it take your time and attention away from your key task?  Try instead reading articles from start to finish before clicking on embedded links.  If you must click, open it in a separate window or tab and come back to it when you’re done with the initial article.

Finally, consider where you are using your computer.  Can you focus while looking out a window? Does working in a bustling coffee shop improve or distract you from engaging with your work?  Some people do focus better in stimulating environments.  Being thoughtful about how and where you use your computer for work is an important part of improving your focus, productivity and quality of work.
