In this “work from home” world, are you falling victim to the myth of multitasking?
We define multitasking as trying to do two or more things at once, or in quick succession. When you multitask, you may feel like you are being more productive when in reality, you may be messing up two or more things at the same time!
“The man who chases two rabbits, catches neither.” – Confucius
The myth of multitasking
Multitasking is often portrayed as a desirable characteristic and a skill that only some people possess. However, many studies conclude that it actually decreases productivity and increases stress. Further, every time we switch tasks, it takes can take up to 15 minutes for our brain to re-engage in the task or project that we switched from. Although you feel busy, you’re actually being less productive and creating more stress and anxiety!
How to tame multitasking madness
When you focus on just one task to completion, you actually will accomplish more work in less time. This means doing the task and thinking about what you’re doing at the same time. Just this one productive habit will have you working smarter, not harder, and getting the results you need.
Recently, Debbie presented one of her most popular webinar workshops, “Multitasking Makes You Stupid”, to the Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA). There were over 100 “virtual” participants, comprising an international audience from the US, UK, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, India, Israel and Taiwan!
Following the webinar, participant comments included words like “engaging, excellent, and helpful”. We were also honored to receive this feedback from SMTA Events & Administrative Manager, Karlie Severinson:
Thank you, Karlie, and participants, for sharing your feedback and for your kind words. It was a pleasure to present the webinar to such a wide-reaching audience of international participants!
